In 2013, the Virginia Museum of Transportation formed the Fire Up 611 Committee to begin restoration work on the Class J steam locomotive Norfolk and Western 611. In 2015, after two years and countless hours of work, the fire was lit and the 611 was returned to operation. The 2017 season marks 611’s third year of excursions.
See the sights from one of our classic domes, enjoy first class service in Parlor Class, or for the ultimate in luxury and comfort, why not try our Chairman’s Class- an exclusive experience available only to a few passengers on each train. We also have two classes of coach seating available, all with the same great service you’ve come to expect on a 611 excursion. Truly, a trip behind the 611 is one you and your family will never forget.
There are a number fun excursion trips planned this spring behind the 611. Our half-day trips are great for families with young children, whose energy level and attention span may not translate well into a full day on the rails. Our full-day trips give you time to explore a new town- this year we’ll visit Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Petersburg. Conveniently, all of the excursionss behind N&W 611 are round-trip, so you’ll end up right where you started!
Help Keep the 611’s fire lit. Your ticket covers the costs of operation and further restoration for the 611, so that future generations can enjoy riding behind this marvel of engineering. In fact, $16.11 from each ticket is saved directly for future restoration work on the 611.
